N Delhi:Prime Minister Office known as PMO in short is no doubt the nerve centre of Indian Power Centre. But you will be surprised to know that the so called busy officials of PMO do find time to read newspapers and magazines you and I can not find time to read. Gossip magazines like Stardust, Griha Sobha, Femina or Women’s Era add beauty to the shelf of PMO.

This interesting piece of news was procured by social activist Afroj Alam Sahil who got them under RTI act. PMO gets newspapers and magazine costing Rs 12 lakh per anum.
PMO subscribes 43 news papers in which 23 belong to English language,10 to Hindi and 4 to Urdu,2 to Marathi and one to Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati and Punjabi each. There are some papers of foreign publications also but what stuns you is absence of regional newspapers from the list. The PMO of a country where 65 per cent people speak and read Hindi, PMO subscribes only 10 dailies in Hindi partly because representation of regional newspapers in PMO is nil.
Born into a Sikh family the Prime Minister office has only one news paper in Punjabi. National and political dailies apart, PMO subscribes to newpapers and magazines on as varied topics as sports, environment, bollywood, economic affairs etc. In total it subscribes to 45 magazines. Strangely enough, there is no magazine or journal of the states.
Though there is no doubt lots of competition among officers of PMO but it is difficult to comprehend as to who is preparing for competitive exams that PMO need to subscribe to career magazines such as competition success review or others. It is also interesting to note that these magazines are not subscribed for documentation but for casual and fun reading.
It almost boarders to apathy that we celebrate Hindi fortnight every year and our Prime Minister gives speech once every year from Red Fort in Hindi and then his office has just 3 publications in Hindi!
The bill for these magazines and newspaper is indeed paid from the pocket of common man and it was hoped that read some thing to understand people’s situation, what in reality turns out is really sad.
According to data received from PMO in the year 2009-10 newspapers and magazines costing 11.92 lakhs were subscribed. In the previous year this figure had crossed 12 lakh marks. All publications are bought from Central News Agency
The lists of magazines are as follows:
