A I M EXPRESSES GRIEF AND PAYS TRIBUTE TO DR OMAR KHALIDI

Washington DC, November 30, 2010.
It is with extreeme grief and shock that the Association of Indian Muslims of America (AIM), Washington DC, has learned of the sudden demise of the very illustrious Indian Muslim scholar and activist, Dr Omar Khalidi, in a street car accident in Cambridge, Massachussetts.  We pray to Allah to grant His most benevolant Rahmat on Dr Khalidi's soul and to give sabar to his young family.

Beyond any question, Dr Khallidi was a most talented and learned scholar who dedicated his life to serving his people, the Muslims of India, and his countrymen, the people of India.  In his short life he conducted most original research on the various aspects of the lives, achievements, aspirations and problems faced by India and the Muslims of India.  His books and articles are a legend.  He was not only a courageous, gifted and prolific writer of much quality, he was also passionately devoted to ensuring authenticity in his writings.  He was a very pleasent person of grreat integrity, an individual who was a joy to be with.

Only two months ago Dr Khalidi was a keynote speaker at the Silver Jubilee celebration of our Association in Washington DC, where he spoke passionately about the ways and means to improve the lives of the Indian Muslims.  He also gave us free of charge his collection of remarkable photographs of Indian Muslims that helped us build a poster exhibition on the Muslims of India.  Only six months ago he organized a very high quality conference on the state of the society in India at the prestigious Massacchussetts Institute of Technology, Boston.

Indeed despite his high reputation as a prominent Indian Muslim intellectual and a very renowned person, he was a most humble person who always looked for ways to help others.

Today we not only mourn such an illustrious and dedicated leader on his very untimely demise, we wonder when another individual from India will rise to his level of ability, dedication nd sense of selfless service to the deprived segment of India.

In much reverence, grief and gratitude the Association of Indian Muslims of America and a large number of Indian Muslims in America pay their heartfelt tribute to this very noble and talented person.
