New Delhi, Jan 30: In a path breaking effort, youth from different sections of the society, mainly from University of Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia, have started a non-governmental organization (NGO) called Programs Leading to Empowerment and Advocacy (PLEA), which was inaugurated today by Naiyarul Islam, former public prosecutor of Siwan District in Bihar.
Shedding light on the mission of the NGO, its General Secretary Saiful Islam said, “As we started working, we found that most NGOs run shops in the name. And so we, a group to work of young professionals and like minded people, came together to work for the vulnerable section of the society. At present, we are focused on educating those children who are marginalized and are lacking in opportunities to get proper education.”
Explaining the reason why the organization aimed at providing education, he said that education is the base for empowerment of any society. It is the only means by which we can serve people in a better way. Educated youth can ensure formation of a healthy society and a prosperous nation. “We are not focused on a particular community, but our target is to bring all weaker and deprived sections of the society in the main stream of education,” he said.
The NGO has been primarily started from Shaheen Bagh, a south-eastern locality of Delhi, and will be expanded to interiors of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Sounding over the future plan of the organization, Aasma Fayaz, Program officer, said: “We are committed to expand our activities in Bihar by the end of this year and start at least three centers in different districts of the state.”
Aasma and her colleague Rabab Imam have left their job to devote full time for PLEA.
Speaking on this occasion, Naiyarul Islam said: “I am personally very impressed with this effort. What makes this organization special is that it has been started by the young blood of the society who have potential to bring change in the society and country at large.”
“We need more and more organization of this kind to address various issues of the country and society,” he said. Islam assured to extend all his possible cooperation for the organization.
