The Nitish Kumar Government’s expenditure on self- promotion has gone up by 500% in the last four years. Most of this money has been spent on print advertisements, according to replies received on a RTI.
In 2009, the Bihar Government spent almost Rs 25 crore to highlight Nitish Kumar’s achievements. The Bihar Government’s expenditure on publicity was Rs 5.40 crore for 2006-07, while in 2007-08 it was Rs 9.65 cr. The real splurge happened in 2008-09, when Government spent nearly 25 cr on advertisements.
In the current financial year, till January 2010, Bihar Government has spent Rs 18.28 cr on advertisements. K.R. Sharma, the director of Bihar’s Information and Public Relations Department, said, “In the past five years, the Government has expanded its area of activities.
Naturally, the budget for publicity will go up. The previous Government (of Rabri Devi) did not pay attention towards the state’sdevelopment.”
Afroz Alam Sahil, who filed the RTI, told THE SUNDAY GUARDIAN, “several district administrations have replied to me.
The authorities have admitted that they have not spent even a single paisa from the MLAs’ constituency development funds,” alleged Alam.
